MIPI camera for Wandboard

Postby svassilev » Fri Apr 27, 2018 5:59 am

Hi,

Will this camera work with Wandboard: https://shop.technexion.com/cam-ov5645.html? If not, what are my options, other than https://www.e-consystems.com/iMX6-wandboard-camera.asp?

Thanks in advance,
Svetoslav

The TechNexion OV5645 works on the Wandboard.

TechNexion edm-imx6 modules are 99% compatible, so if everything else fails, the TexhNexion BSP should be usable.

Hi Tapani,

Can you please provide more information about this camera support? You said the TechNexion OV5645 works on the Wandboard, but with which kernel version do you mean?

With a 4.1 kernel, I am getting these errors:
ov5640_read_reg:write reg error:reg=300a
camera ov5640_mipi is not found
ERROR: v4l2 capture: slave not found!

Thanks, Clay

OmniVision has discontinued the OV5640 and OV5642 camera modules, which is why most of the cameras that were once offered for the Wandboard are no longer available.
The TechNexion module has the newer OV5645, which is almost identical to the OV5640 except its JPEG encoder has been removed, as it was typically not used.

Support for the OV5645 has recently been added for Yocto Rocko and Sumo, but earlier versions of Yocto do not directly support this newer camera module.

Hi Sandi,

I am glad to help, but I need some help too. I always get those same errors on rev D1 boards, but not rev C1 boards.

The issue is not the kernel version. I have the OV5645 camera working with Yocto Pyro (4.1 kernel) on rev C1 Wandboards.

I think the issue with rev D1 boards is a bug in the device tree configuration for the camera.

Of course, you must edit this file to boot with the correct device tree for D1, but this does not fix the problem:
/boot/extlinux.conf

I have been experimenting with copying these device tree source files from Rocko to my Pyro build to gain support for rev D1:
~/Yocto/Wandboard-Rocko/build/tmp/work-shared/wandboard/kernel-source/arch/arm/boot/dts
imx6q-wandboard.dts
imx6q-wandboard-revb1.dts
imx6q-wandboard-revb1.dts
imx6q-wandboard-revc1.dts
imx6q-wandboard-revc1.dts
imx6q-wandboard-revd1.dts
imx6qp-wandboard-revd1.dts

imx6dl-wandboard-revd1.dts
imx6qdl-wandboard-revd1.dtsi
imx6qdl-wandboard.dtsi

The last one has changes specific for ov5645 camera support, but I do not have it working yet.
Take a look at this and see what you think.

Sandi,

I just tested again and to my surprise it is working now on rev D1. The work I was doing last week (copying the device tree source files) actually fixed the problem, but I had not noticed it yet because of another bug in my code. I will try to pin this down in the next few days and give you a more specific answer.

But, for now, you should definitely fix this:
camera ov5645_mipi is not found

My system reports:
camera ov5645_mipi is found

Try lsmod, I get:

Module Size Used by
lw_2 2662 0
mxc_v4l2_capture 24828 1
ipu_bg_overlay_sdc 5302 1 mxc_v4l2_capture
ipu_still 2300 1 mxc_v4l2_capture
ipu_prp_enc 5942 1 mxc_v4l2_capture
ov5645_mipi 23078 0
ipu_csi_enc 3673 1 mxc_v4l2_capture
ipu_fg_overlay_sdc 6144 1 mxc_v4l2_capture
v4l2_int_device 2913 2 ov5645_mipi,mxc_v4l2_capture
galcore 225501 0

Also, I had to modify the chip id number in the source for the camera driver from "5640" to "5645" to even get it working on rev C1, but, it appears you have already done that?
