Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Postby GTRONICK » Thu Apr 02, 2015 3:08 am

Hi everybody!, recently i have made a SDcard with the Robert Nelson's Ubuntu 14.04 image. The board boot normally, and the login prompt is shown. No GUI is present.
So, i have made the following:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Both completed successfully. Now i want a GUI, so, i did:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install lxde-core lightdm

Installation run without problems, but at reboot, i'm again on the console
So, i did:

Code: Select all
startlxde

BUT, i received this:

Agent pid 4159
** Message: main.vala:99: Session is LXDE
** Message: main.vala:100: DE is LXDE

(lxsession:4151): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I think you might go wrong with:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It might "upgrade" your X server, and the updated version might no longer be compatible with the binary Vivnte Xorg drivers.
This has been a common pitfall with other Ubuntu versions (the official Ubuntu Xorg does not support Vivante GPU).

Well, after doing this, i still getting the same "Gtk-WARNING **:" error. I have created the xorg.conf file, as shows here: https://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/Wandboard.
But still not working. I can only see a blinking cursor on the screen. All the commands i enter, must be entered through the serial interface using GtkTerm.
