Wifi Not working on Ubuntu 14.04 Wandboard Quad C1

Postby GTRONICK » Tue Jul 07, 2015 12:01 am

Hello everybody,

I'm having problems with the Wifi on the Wandboard Quad Rev. C1, using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, from the Wandboard.org images. I know the Wifi module is Ok, because i have tested the same board with the Ubuntu 12.04 image, and it works really nice. But the Ubuntu 12.04 image don't let me change the resolution, using Xrandr, or the setenv bootargs command. On any attempt to change the resolution, the screen goes pink and shows "Out of range". The change resolutions method i have used with setenv, works with another monitor, but does not with this. So, I decided to use the Ubuntu 14.04 image, where, I can change the resolution with xrandr and now it is runing under 1024x768 really nice. Now, i was not aware about the wifi, because i always was using the ethernet cable. But i need the Wifi to do a data streamig over a local network without cables. I have made the following without success:

http://blog.oaktreepeak.com/2014/10/ena ... _quad.html

Debug operation:

Command:
Code: Select all
 ifconfig -a

Result:

ubuntu@wandboard:~$ ifconfig -a

# primary network interface

#iface eth0 inet dhcp

Code: Select all
sudo ifup waln0

Result:

Code: Select all
sudo ifdown waln0

ifdown: interface wlan0 not configured

Code: Select all
ls /lib/firmware/brcm/

Output:

bcm4330.hcd brcmfmac4329-sdio.txt brcmfmac4330-sdio.txt

I tried the simlink suggested in the link, but it does not work, so, i tried with the Robert Nelson's instructions here:

"WiFi

Dual/Quad only (Solo has no WiFi module installed)
see: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kerne ... 1-rc3#n317
Code: Select all

wget -c https://rcn-ee.com/repos/git/meta-fsl-arm-extra/recipes-bsp/broadcom-nvram-config/files/wandboard/brcmfmac4330-sdio.txt

sudo mkdir -p /media/rootfs/lib/firmware/brcm/

sudo cp -v ./brcmfmac43*-sdio.bin /media/rootfs/lib/firmware/brcm/
sudo cp -v ./brcmfmac43*-sdio.txt /media/rootfs/lib/firmware/brcm/

"

But, the wifi still not working as you can see in the previous commands.

I also looked for the brcm driver, but the following command return nothing:

Code: Select all
ubuntu@wandboard:~$ dmesg | grep brcm
ubuntu@wandboard:~$

dmesg ouput contents attached as dmesg.txt

dmesg.txt
dmesg output at Wandboard Quad C1 boot
(24.29 KiB) Downloaded 210 times

I can see at this output that, the Bluethooth is loaded, but the Wifi or brcm does not.

Code: Select all
iwconfig

Output:

sit0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Any help is appreciated. :)

Strange, since wifi is supposed to work without any manual steps.

What happens if you try
Code: Select all
modprobe brcmfmac
modprobe brcmutil

Do you get a wlanX interface?

Good morning Tapani,

After some package install, i can get the wlan1 interface on ifconfig -a:

Code: Select all
ifconfig -a

Output:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1f:7b:b4:12:10
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1
RX packets:141 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:141 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:9891 (9.8 KB) TX bytes:9891 (9.8 KB)

sit0 Link encap:IPv6-in-IPv4
NOARP MTU:1480 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wlan1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr fc:4d:d4:c5:0e:2e
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

What I did?

Installed:

dhcpcd dhcpcd-dbus dhcpdump dhcping
dhcpcd5 dhcpcd-gtk dhcp-helper dhcp-probe

After install those packages, the wlan1 interface appeared automatically. However, on
Code: Select all
sudo ifup wlan1

It returns:
Code: Select all
Ignoring unknown interface wlan1=wlan1.

I have already uninstalled all these packages again, and the wlan1 keeps appearing. A problem with WICD connection manager appears when I install the packages . On any reboot, wicd ask for password with a message that puts: "Wicd needs to access your computer's network cards"

I enter the password, and then I can connect to Ethernet. Wifi, however, does not show any available connection but hang on!, when I turn off the wifi on wicd, and then turn on it again, after some seconds, the Wifi networks are shown!. Even so, I cannot connect to any, because the bad password error. I have also tested creating a Wifi shared connection on my Kubuntu PC, the wicd interface list it, I click "Connect", but it stuks on "Obtaining ip adress" and then, not connect.

Now, on the commands you give me:

Code: Select all
modprobe brcmutil

Returns nothing

Code: Select all
modprobe brcmfmac

Returns nothing

UPDATE:

After completely uninstall the dhcp packages, the eth0 and wlan1 interfaces disappeared. Now I'm not able to connect to any network. I'm copying the sdCard image again after a backup. I will try again. I mean, I did a backup of the image before attempting to fix wifi, so, i will return to the state one:

STATE 1: Wifi not working, eth0 working, lo and eth0 interfaces listed on ifconfig -a. Wlan0 not listed on ifconfig -a. Wicd not asking for password.

Well, after some more test, I decided to change the Wandboard, and use another which I have bought, also Quad C1. And... IT WOrks!!!. :D
The Wi-Fi is OK, I can connect to my wireless network, navigate, make ping, etc. It is wpa2 and works fine. So...., I have a broken Wandboard I guess. Here, the boot log:

The non damaged Wandboard boot log, is attached as goodBoot_WandBoardQuadC1.txt
The damaged wandboard boot log, is attached as badBoyBoot.txt

Also, after reboot, the board does not boot, and gets stuck showing 4 penguins on the screen. Attached the non boot log as: penguinBoot.txt

Hi GTRONICK:

Did you have the error kernel message for Your broken Wandboard (brcm relative log) ? something like SDIO bus error.
And if you try the old ubuntu image, it also failed?

I prefer it was a hardware broken, but I want to check more detail.
Thanks!
