Can we use updated kernel?

Postby khiremandar » Wed Feb 18, 2015 1:05 pm

hi,
As i seen in kitkat source we used KERNELVERSION = 3.0.35
But now on https://www.kernel.org/ KERNELVERSION = 3.19

I seen some changes in newer kernel like
Driver for Touchscreen which used for touchscreen controller ADS7846 in input folder.
Its diffstat is given in following link:-
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/diff/drivers/input/touchscreen/ads7846.c?id=v3.19&id2=v3.18

I compare both c files in file comparing tool. Few changes is there.
So question is when newer version release, it for better performance with fewer problems, so can we use newer kernel with Android 4.3 or 4.4.2?
If yes then what should we take precautions & steps?
If no then why?

Hello, khiremandar:

As you see, recently we release android lollipop pre-built image on wandboard homepage.
This android image is with linux 3.10.53 kernel.
Actually, we plan to migrate to linux 3.10.53 kernel for all new release.
Why we choose 3.10.53 rather than 3.19 ?
Because linux 3.10.53 is the GA release from Freescale, it should be more stable than 3.19.( ..............i hope so.)

Thanks Richard & vpeter,
Glad to read that in new version of Android we can get updated kernel.
But my question is
1. I dont want to change Android part source code, just want to change kernel level part.
means combination of that, example
Android part as Jelly bean but kernel 3.1x.x
Android part as kitkat but kernel 3.1x.x etc.
This question may be just hypothetical but will it possible?

Hello, khiremandar:

For freescale android, It is highly tied with GPU driver.
https://community.freescale.com/docs/DOC-93612

It needs to figure out if the version of GPU driver in 3.1x.x kernel is also compatible with freescale android 4.3/4.4 .
